Health of the Nation 2024

Irish Life Health of the Nation research reveals a big generational gap between older and younger cohorts when it comes to their Mental Health and Wellbeing.

The findings from our 2024 Health of the Nation research report shows a stark picture of our nations health and a noticeable difference in reporting between the younger generation (16-35 year olds) and the older generation (over 35’s)

  • For the 5th consecutive year our National Health Score has declined

  • Mental Health and Social connection causing the most significant impact on lives

  • 60% of adults considered overweight or obese

  • 37% of people describe themselves as feeling lonely or isolated compared to 19% in 2019

  • 54% of 16-35 year olds have a ‘poor’ health score

  • Smartphone use, increased consumption of ultra processed foods and declining family and friendship bonds are key drivers of poor mental health.

  • 89% feel positive about the future

  • 90% believe in their ability to overcome challenges.

The research reveals some positive connections and improvements that can assist overall. A healthy lifestyle, especially in social life plays a significant role in keeping up mentally well. Improving other areas in life, goes hand in hand with a healthier weight and better physical health. Those with a high social index, don’t smoke, have a lower than the average weight range, exercise more are less anxious and stressed and are more hopeful, less sad and depressed.

The Health of the Nation research has been conducted on an annual basis since 2018, aside from 2021 where restrictions were in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic  Not all areas of interest were examined in each wave of research.
